''When I was 20-21 I left a surf company and started my own company HUSTLUR board companyand hooked up with sublime way back in 1995. Brad believed in me and what I was trying to achieve and for that I’m eternally grateful. My brothers and I had a crazy run right up to Brad’s untimely passing. That’s us on stage at the Michael Supper Club in Dana Point Harbor that was me being Jeff Spicoli and hiring Van Halen to play after saving Brook Shields from drowning. Literally in a matter of minutes of destroying the place in front of all my friends we made history! To say Bradley and Sublime effected my life in negative and positive ways is an understatement. Bradley and Sublime was a 800 pound King Kong Gorilla of a band that could fill a concert hall and sell out within hours. This is back when cell phones weren’t out and people had landlines and answering machines. I got to live my dream with next Punk Rock Beach Boys, Grateful Dead, Bad Religion. 26 years ago seems so silly in the long run truly it does? You single handed my wrote the musical formula every ska reggae band has used in the last 25 years! I’ve kept these mementos in storage. I figure I would share some memories today. - Hung Tran''

Two of seven people were still in jail Tuesday evening after a Belmont Shore Independence Day celebration turned into a melee between partiers and police.
A police helicopter and 44 officers were needed to subdue a rowdy crowd of about 400 people at the corner of 62nd place and Ocean Avenue who allegedly shot Roman candles and threw firecrackers and bottles at the police, said Cmdr. Jim Stewert of the Long Beach Police Department.
Some people said the police overreacted during the confrontation in which one officer was injured in the knee by a flying bottle. But no complaints of police misconduct had been filed by 6 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Sigfried Kapu, 19, of Long Beach, held on $2,000 bail, was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, and Illya Watkins, 20, also of Long Beach, held on $60,000 bail, was booked on charges of firing an explosive devise at an aircraft, police said.
Ron Olsen, 21, of Long Beach, was booked on charges of using an explosive device. He was released after posting bail Tuesday. Four people were arrested for failing to disperse and another for public intoxication.

To a call at 4:30 p.m. about an unruly beach party at 59th Place and sent 10 officers to investigate, said Stewart.
“Shortly after 5 p.m. we got a complaint that people were breaking windows and looting stores on 62nd Place”, said Stewart. There were about 200 people drinking and milling around the street, shooting off firecrackers, he said.
The window of The Decanter liquor store was broken late Monday afternoon, but it apparently was an accident, and nothing was taken, said store owner Bob Merlo.
“It wasn’t out-of-control but it was on the verge,” said Tony Perez, 28, an 18-year resident of Belmont Shore. “It was bottled up for a year but the cork came out last night.”
“There were a lot of people and it could have turned into a major riot if it wasn’t handled properly by police,” said Geo Ribb, 36, owner of a laundry on 62nd Place. “It could have been a lot worse than it was.”
The crowd continued to grow and about 8:30 p.m., the police saw a man shooting fireworks a building and proceeded to arrest him.

“When we moved in the crowd tried to free the subject and they became unruly,” said Stewart.
At 9 p.m. the police ruled it and unlawful assembly and helmeted officers with plastic face shields swept the crowd out to the beach and told them again to disperse, said Stewart. Police gave the crowd 10 minutes to leave and told them they would be subject to arrest, he added.
“We must ensure for the safety of citizens and the police and we were significantly outnumbered,” said deputy police chief Gene Brizzolara.
The crowd dispersed after a helicopter “got down low enough to where it would fling some sand around,” said Stewart.
“People looked like ants running along the beach,” said Joanna Holtz, 20, a waitress at the café on 62nd Place.

“Everybody likes to have a party as long as it doesn’t get out of hand,” said Don Roberts, 65, a retired high school teacher who lives on 61st Place. “When you lose control and the family can’t go enjoy something like this (the fireworks), there’s something wrong.”

"Absolutely. It's on their (kids) level. They listen to screwups like us. It's real important; I know somebody, I think everybody [members of Sublime] knows somebody who's got the virus.

''The fact that a heterosexual person can get it is a relevant fact [that] you know we need to get out there. It's definitely non-discriminating. It's [Board AID] a wonderful way to get a bunch of kids together, and instead of preaching to them you are sending the right message, and that's great.

''This is Sublime for LIFEbeat, and we are here to tell you to wear latex condoms and don't share needles. Bleach them three times, and three times in water."

''At first, the outlook wasn't very good for Board AID III. Several days before the event, many of the Board AID staff were found wearing garbage bags over their clothes and make-shift cardboard box hats on their heads in an attempt to shed themselves from the rain while assembling the skateboard ramp. But as luck would have it, the clouds disappeared and the sun shone beautifully once again for all the couples who came out to support Board AID on Valentine's Day. There were over 4,000 people in attendance at Board AID III. And thanks to our sponsors and individual contributions, the event raised over 160,000 dollars to benefit LIFEbeat's Joey DiPaolo Fund.

''Event highlights included the attendance of over 150 pros who performed demos for the crowd, such as the skateboarding big-air contest won by Adil Dyani and the snowboarding Convert BoarderCross competition won by Team Palmer (Shaun Palmer & gang). Booths from sponsoring board-sport, record and product companies were giving away free goodies, but with a challenge; twister games, basketball shooting, spin the wheel were all ways for one to "earn" the prizes.

''Musical performances by punk-pioneer's Bad Religion, Long Beach's ska/punk Sublime, San Diego's youthful punkers Unwritten Law, and Seattle's all-women rockers 7 Year Bitch, entertained the masses under the Southern California sun. AID education booths from different local organizations creatively educated the attendees with condom races, cool giveaways for correct safe-sex answers and more. Also heart-felt speeches from Rana Ross, Rebecca Armstrong and Board AID spokesperson Joey DiPaolo, all are HIV positive, discussed how they deal withthe disease on an everyday basis.

''Each person came away from this day alittle bit smarter on how to protect themselves from the virus and a better understanding of those living with the disease. Adding to the high-energy atmosphere of the event were the appearances of celebrities such as Seal, for whom Bear Mountain let ride for several more runs after the mountain closed in order to escape from some of the autograph hounds. Also in attendance was Seal's guest, supermodel Veronica Webb, MTV's Kennedy, and members from bands like Offspring, House of Pain, Rage Against the Machine, Mr. Marainga, and Biohazard who all met and hung out with one another during the event.

''"It's really beautiful out here," Bradley, lead singer/guitarist for Sublime, said. "It's a great environment, everyone's having a great time and it's for a good cause to boot. It's great to let people listen to all the good music and watch the demonstrations while teaching them about AIDS at the same time."

''Sublime bassist Eric Wilson gave his thoughts on the day after playing a short 30-minute set.

''"There's some really good bands out here and I am ready to see what's going on," Wilson said. "It's a nice day today and the conditions are good."
