Notes
This is the second to last Sublime show ever. It was an open air event which drew an untold number of fans to see one of Brad's second to last performance.

The name of the show was a play on words of Chico (the City), Lalapalozza (the concert), and Palooka (which is a type of Buffoon)

*From memories of multiple sources;

The day started off with Hucksalt Hepspeed opening the show. Between bands, there was a sideshow entertainer swallowing swords and sticking nails into his nose. Next Kai Kln played one of there best sets to many peoples memory. Brad and the crew were not familiar with Kai Kln, and didn't particularly care for them much. One of the members from the KK crew was having beers behind the stage with Brad while KK was playing. Brad mocked Gene's voice a few times in a falsetto voice, without realizing the person was a part of the band. Then, Kai Kln played their Black Sabbath cover and the Sublime crew really started digging them. Then, Sublime went on that night playing an awesome set which gained some new fans who had previously only been there to see Kai Kln.

Memories from the show

*From Dave:

"I was there, more or less... Celebrating the end of my first year of studying mechanical engineering at Chico State, those damn dollar pints all across town got the best of me as they always do. My buddy and I finally stumbled to the show only to realize later on that we had missed Kai Kln's set completely. Once Sublime was done, all I could say was 'who the hell are they' and 'what the hell was that'. A few months later, after some heavy radio play, I finally picked up 40 oz. to Freedom, and Sublime was instantly one of my all-time favorite bands, right up there with Kai Kln. It has been almost 14 years now, but for some reason I still remember that the opening band on the bill was Hucksalt Hedspeed..."

*From Gregory:

"Most likely Kai Kln was the last band to play with Sublime. The singer died on May 25th, according to Wikipedia, and chicopalooza was on May 23rd. There was a rumor that found my ears that the heroin was purchased in Chico, not surprising at that time - there was rumors that it was stronger than Nowell might have been used to. The show was awesome, let me tell you about my trip...

It started as most things did back then, in Santa Cruz. Good friends of mine were Kln heads for a while and had turned me onto them quickly and easily. This was probably my 7th show or so and the road trip to Chico (the number one party school at the time) sounded too good to miss.
Packed in a rusty-yellow Hoda (Honda, but the 'n' had fallen off) the three of us journey to Chico. Upon arrival we were somehow not able to meet who we planned and pulled off onto a side street and parked. Being smokers, we exited and smoked. While smoking, beautiful college girls stuck their heads out the window and (being drunk and going to the show too) and invited us up. There was Sublime on the CD player, which I found out when the cover of 'Scarlet Begonias' was playing and I asked who they were.

The night came, Kai Kln RIPPED it to pieces and we joked about who could follow that. Wisely, there was a strange freak-show type entertainer who swallowed swords and pounded nails into his nose. Sublime played and I was highly impressed with the groves they brought out in their songs. I remember chuckling at a number of the lyrics I heard. One great trip, one great show. Sadly, I can still see Kai Kln now and then, but whatever Sublime might have done in the future is lost to dreams.
I hear Sublime to this day - often."

*From Kevin:

"I still have my ticket stub from that awesome show. I gotta say that I was there to see Kai Kln and they killed it. There was some circus sideshow guy swallowing swords and sticking nails up his nose and such. I wasn't a huge Sublime fan and for me the best part of their set was a when they covered an old Descendents song. History was made and the kids all had a good time. "'

Notes
This is the second to last Sublime show ever. It was an open air event which drew an untold number of fans to see one of Brad's second to last performance. Luckily, it appears that Adam Tuttle was photographing this show.

The name of the show was a play on words of Chico (the City), Lalapalozza (the concert), and Palooka (which is a type of Buffoon)

*From memories of multiple sources;

Notes
*Sublime's last ever gig... making it a must hear bootleg. The quality is not brilliant, but it does manage to capture the masses of energy that day.

*Albino Brown recorded this show to video and has only released part of it (4 songs) to Brads family, friends and VH1 to make behind the music.

*The concert promoter, Lil' Mike, who promoted the Kommotion shows and was friends with the band sent his girlfriend, Badfish, to this show. She fortunately recorded part the show to her walkman recorder from the middle of the crowd. Her recording does not include "Work That We Do" (which was shown from Albino's recording) and Hope was recorded at the beginning of the second side. The full tracklist is still unknown. There was a banner over the pit which read "Play Nice In The Pit", and hence where the name of the recording came from.

*From Bud Gaugh's Website:

"SUBLIME played a show in Chino, CA where the promoter offered us a veritable smorgasborg of every drug under the sun- Brad came to me and said he wanted to "party just one more time." I told Brad it wasn't worth it, but after our show in Petaluma Brad & I got a hotel room on the beach outside of San Francisco. Brad tried to convince me we had all the reasons to party & it was worth celebrating, "We owe it to ourselves," I can remember him telling me. It was 2:00 am & I declined, falling asleep, Brad left to go walk on the beach with Lou Dog. When I woke up the next morning, I saw my best friend, naked, laying on the bed with his feet on the floor. I remember laughing, thinking he had gotten so drunk the night before he couldn't make it into bed, but when I got no response from him I got up to see what was going on, and that's when the world came to a screeching halt. I tried to resuscitate him, but he had been dead for hours. I began crying out loud for help, ran down stairs & down the road looking for the rest of the guys. This was the worse news I ever had to deliver in my life. After being interviewed by the police I was told by the EMTs that he had been gone for hours and there was nothing I could do. This was the longest bus ride of all of our lives."
* In the beginning of the show, Brad says "Fuck it! Hey man if you could get these things turned on before the end of the night that'd be key.. cause they look real nice sitting here; they look really fucking pro!" Might be referring to the high quality video equipment used to record the show.

*Following "Saw Red" Brad says; "Alright then, Rock. Lets rock this mother. cause this place can rock. Where we at? Whats up gang!?"

* "Alright we'll play a song. All You Need alright?," then asks the audience with a growling "Sup?" This performance of All You Need is used in the Music Video on the Everything Under The Sun Boxset. (See link above.)

* Before "40 oz to freedom" Brad says "Hi Jason. lookin hot tonight." Probably in reference to Jason Westfall.

*After "Minor Threat" Brad mentions they only one more, but finishes this recording strong with a performance of Badfish and the Bad Brains cover "House of Suffering". *Rolling Stone Article January 15, 1997:

Six hours of memories, music and moshing marked the Enough Already Sublime Rock 'N' Roll Benefit show at the Hollywood Palladium Saturday night. Peers, bandmates and fans of Sublime showed up for hip up and comers like fluf, Ziggens, Voodoo Glowskulls, and of course, for headliners No Doubt. But the underlying theme -- to raise scholarship money for late Sublime singer Bradley Nowell's son, Jakob, and for the Musician's Assistance Program (MAP), was not forgotten.

As might be expected, the first couple of acts, Slightly Stoopid, All Day and Filibuster, who each played 15-minute sets starting at 6 p.m. sharp, plied their trade to a half-full house. But by the time fluf, Ziggens (who are on Sublime's record label, Skunk) and Orange County scene staples the Vandals took the stage, the Palladium was a virtual teen rock fest eager to become one with the trendy, in-crowd South Bay/Orange County music scene.

Pennywise, with a positive, fluid sound leaning more to straight rock than a real ska or punk vibe, stirred things up with the appropriate tunes "Fight 'Til U Die" and an amazing, punked-up version of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me." Pennywise, who like Sublime, has endured the passing of a bandmember, were particularly adamant about the evening's theme, with PW singer Jim railing to the photographers in the front row: "This isn't a media event, it's about something!" before closing with the Circle Jerks' cover "Live Fast, Die Young."

The Long Beach Dub Allstars, a project featuring Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh of Sublime, found fans for their mellow reggae grooves and the Sublime tune "Pawn Shop," though many in the young crowd didn't seem to realize that a rather subdued H.R. from the Bad Brains was guesting on several songs.

A 20-minute Sublime mini-movie was moving and surprisingly well received, reminding the audience and participants of the lost talents of Bradley Nowell, as well as Sublime's kick-back SoCal lifestyle and musical gifts, as the past-Gold sales of Sublime's self-titled major-label debut have now shown.

While there was a dearth of the usual Gwen-o-philes at the Palladium, No Doubt's engaging ska and endless energy was the ideal capper to a long and surprisingly varied night. Gwen Stefani's coltish, coquettish persona was cutesy but truly charismatic, while the endlessly skanking horn and keyboard players incited the crowd to manic proportions.

"Spiderweb," "Don't Speak" and "Just a Girl" were included, but when nearly the entire evening's cast of musical characters joined No Doubt for a marvelous rendition of the Beatles "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" -- a tune that lends itself easily to ska influences -- and Brad Nowell's beloved Dalmatian, Lou, made an onstage appearance, it was a poignant moment of pleasure and sadness. As the Beatles wrote, "Ob la di, ob la da ... life goes on," but sadly, not for Brad

"I walked into Harry C's in the middle of 96 Degrees' set. This band has a cool reggae sound. I was thoroughly impressed with the two female singers, that fronted the band, [that] are extremely talented. Sages of Memphis played next. It was campy rock galore. A cover of Berlin's "Metro" was thrown in for good measure. Sublime grooved the house next. I have to say these three men are the mellowest, coolest, beer drinking music playing fellows I have seen in awhile. They packed the house into almost overflow. A good time was enjoyed by all. Mortitia played last, unfortunately, most everyone left before they played. Mortitia gives a good performance with their heave almost speed metal sound. They were definitely placed on the wrong bill though."

February 22nd, 1968:
Bradley James Nowell is born to parents James and Nancy Nowell in Long Beach, California.

1970-1975:
Bradley’s musical talents begin with his parents. His father is a folk guitarist, and his mother is a singer (in high school she received "Best in California") and later a professional musician (flute) who has been described as having a "perfect pitch.", as well as being the daughter of a music teacher.

1975-1979:
Bradley begins to learn to play the guitar from his father.

1978:
Bradley’s parents, James and Nancy get divorced. Bradley lives with his mother until 1981.

Summer 1979:
During a vacation to Jamaica with his father, Bradley discovers reggae music. A local guitarist teaches Bradley how to play a reggae rhythm on his guitar. The experience changes Bradley forever.

1979:
Two future Sublime members, 10-year-old Eric Wilson (bass) and 12-year-old Floyd I. "Bud" Gaugh (drums) meet in Lowell Elementary School in Long Beach

1982:
Bud moves away to Lakewood, and Eric starts the punk sister-band to Sublime, Juice Bros.

1982:
Bud starts the Lakewood punk band, Resistance. Around the same time, Bud meets Jack Maness who later performs Rivers Of Babylon

1983-1984:
Around this time, Eric and Brad meet in school. They perform together in their first band together called Hogan's Heroes.

1985: Bradley, Eric Wilson, Tom Spruengli, Eric Ward, the late Ruth Goodman, and the late Ted Lee perform in a band called "Sloppy Seconds" during Brad's senior year at High School. Also, Tom Spruengli occasionally sits in with the band, Agent Orange. Around this time, Eric Wilson meets Marshall Goodman in band class. They are both friends to the artist, Opie Ortiz. Bud moves back to Long Beach and begins drumming with Juice Bros.

1986:
Bradley graduates from Wilson High School and attends U.C. Santa Cruz where he continues to develop musically.

Spring Break 1987 or 1988: (There is debate as to which year but this current editor has decided to go with 1988 for many reasons, the principal one being that Bud cited that year in Italic textCrazy Fool"
Brad comes home for spring break, and Eric Wilson introduces him to Bud Gaugh, and Sublime is born. Sublime’s first recording, two years before (maybe) the official creation of Sublime is a 4-track demo titled Fighting Blindly. It later shows up on Sublime’s bootleg record Sinsemilla ’86 - ’96.

05.25.1986 Seal Beach, CA - Brad's Seal Beach House, Sloppy 2nds garage house party.

1987: Brad writes Date Rape while not in a band, it will later be his claim to fame.

1987:
While at school at UC Santa Cruz, Brad plays a minor gig at an on campus coffee shop. He plays an acoustic set consisting of a decent amount of X covers. This "show" was probably not recorded.
Still one year before the official creation of Sublime, more demos are made. Some of these songs, such as Romeo, New Realization, and Roots Of Creation have shown up on various Sublime releases as B-sides and demos. Others will never see the light of day. If Ebin was on these tapes, then that song was absolutely made in 1988 or later because Brad did not encounter the real Eben until around February 1988.

If you get bored, I added all the links to videos for shows up until 1994, you can finish that if you'd like. Awesome work on the bootleg covers, too.. I wanted to do that, but adding them in with the pictures just got distracting and such. Should have thought to use the thumbnail feature. :)

You have been doing amazing helping out on the wiki. It's coming together so well. I am moving along with writing the book, and will be doing a lot of research and such, and will probably not have much time to do huge updates like the party one. I will just put the information up, and would appreciate you if you will format it. Thanks guys! -Josh

Two of seven people were still in jail Tuesday evening after a Belmont Shore Independence Day celebration turned into a melee between partiers and police.
A police helicopter and 44 officers were needed to subdue a rowdy crowd of about 400 people at the corner of 62nd place and Ocean Avenue who allegedly shot Roman candles and threw firecrackers and bottles at the police, said Cmdr. Jim Stewert of the Long Beach Police Department.
Some people said the police overreacted during the confrontation in which one officer was injured in the knee by a flying bottle. But no complaints of police misconduct had been filed by 6 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Sigfried Kapu, 19, of Long Beach, held on $2,000 bail, was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, and Illya Watkins, 20, also of Long Beach, held on $60,000 bail, was booked on charges of firing an explosive devise at an aircraft, police said.
Ron Olsen, 21, of Long Beach, was booked on charges of using an explosive device. He was released after posting bail Tuesday. Four people were arrested for failing to disperse and another for public intoxication.
The police initially responded
CONTINUED/A10, Col. 1

Belmont Shore party lands 7 in jail

FROM/A1

To a call at 4:30 p.m. about an unruly beach party at 59th Place and sent 10 officers to investigate, said Stewart.
“Shortly after 5 p.m. we got a complaint that people were breaking windows and looting stores on 62nd Place”, said Stewart. There were about 200 people drinking and milling around the street, shooting off firecrackers, he said.
The window of The Decanter liquor store was broken late Monday afternoon, but it apparently was an accident, and nothing was taken, said store owner Bob Merlo.
“It wasn’t out-of-control but it was on the verge,” said Tony Perez, 28, an 18-year resident of Belmont Shore. “It was bottled up for a year but the cork came out last night.”
“There were a lot of people and it could have turned into a major riot if it wasn’t handled properly by police,” said Geo Ribb, 36, owner of a laundry on 62nd Place. “It could have been a lot worse than it was.”
The crowd continued to grow and about 8:30 p.m., the police saw a man shooting fireworks a building and proceeded to arrest him.

“When we moved in the crowd tried to free the subject and they became unruly,” said Stewart.
At 9 p.m. the police ruled it and unlawful assembly and helmeted officers with plastic face shields swept the crowd out to the beach and told them again to disperse, said Stewart. Police gave the crowd 10 minutes to leave and told them they would be subject to arrest, he added.
“We must ensure for the safety of citizens and the police and we were significantly outnumbered,” said deputy police chief Gene Brizzolara.
The crowd dispersed after a helicopter “got down low enough to where it would fling some sand around,” said Stewart.
“People looked like ants running along the beach,” said Joanna Holtz, 20, a waitress at the café on 62nd Place.

“Everybody likes to have a party as long as it doesn’t get out of hand,” said Don Roberts, 65, a retired high school teacher who lives on 61st Place. “When you lose control and the family can’t go enjoy something like this (the fireworks), there’s something wrong.”

== "Cheekopalooka" at Downtown Plaza Park Chico, CA == Thursday, May 23rd, 1996
All Ages Show

This is the second to last Sublime show ever. It was an open air event which drew an untold number of fans to see one of Brad's second to last performance. Luckily, it appears that Adam Tuttle was photographing this show.

The name of the show was a play on words of Chico (the City), Lalapalozza (the concert), and Palooka (which is a type of Buffoon)

Songs Performed (in no particular order)
# Hope
# Scarlet Begonias
# House of Suffering

*From memories of multiple sources;

*A humble thanks to the promoter of this show, Greg Kempton, for not only saving promotional items, but also being kind enough to share them with the SublimeWiki. Also, many thanks to Sherman Loper of Kai Kln for helping collect these memories
