Cadillac Tramps Go Driving for Pearls
By MIKE BOEHM
Aug. 20, 1993
12 AM
TIMES STAFF WRITER

For the Cadillac Tramps, last week was one of Shakespearean proportions: first a comedy of errors, then all’s well that ends well.

At some point in the middle of it, the road-weary band must have thought about trading its kingdom--or it least its much-abused 1985 Dodge Ram touring van--for a Lear jet.

The unlikely series of events began to unfold on Aug. 6 in Seattle, when three members of Pearl Jam’s entourage, including the mega-selling band’s bassist, Jeff Ament, saw the Tramps’ gig at Grunge City’s Crocodile Cafe.

They were sufficiently impressed to recommend the Tramps as opening act for two sold-out Pearl Jam concerts, Aug. 11-12 in the Canadian cities of Calgary and Edmonton.

But nothing was certain.

The Tramps played Aug. 7 in Portland, Ore., the last night of their five-week national tour, and headed for home. Brian Coakley, the Tramps’ guitarist, said it was his assignment to call in from the road to see whether the talked-about opportunity with Pearl Jam had panned out. The band wasn’t banking on it.

“We’ve heard this before,” Coakley said. “ ‘The Chili Peppers are going to take you on tour,’ ‘Nirvana likes you.’ ” So Coakley got some needed sleep in the van, and by the time he awoke, he’d forgotten about calling in for instructions concerning possible dates with Pearl Jam.

“It completely slipped my mind. When I walked in the door (back home in Cypress), my dad said, ‘You (screwed) up.’ We had to turn around the next day and drive back. We had driven 24 hours straight down the West Coast. We slept at home, then drove all the way back to Calgary, which was like a 39-hour drive.”

At the end of it, the Tramps, a group that combines the deliciously crunchy roots ‘n’ punk guitar playing of Coakley and Jonny Wickersham with a good dose of humor from animated front man Mike (Gabby) Gaborno, still had enough left to impress the audience and make some new friends in high places.

“The crowd received us really well,” Coakley said. “I look over to the side, and there’s (Pearl Jam singer) Eddie Vedder filming us with a Super 8 camera, laughing and waving at me and just really enjoying it.”

For the Edmonton show, Coakley said, Vedder came out and introduced the Tramps before their set. “He said, ‘This band drove 39 hours to get here,’ and that we were the best band that ever opened for them. It was one of those trips where it’s, ‘Wow, is this real?’ ”

The Tramps won’t have far to go tonight to celebrate their homecoming: the band headlines a “Recessionfest ’93" bill at Inn at the Park, 1855 S. Harbor Blvd. in Anaheim. Tickets to the 7 p.m. show cost $5 for the five-band lineup, which also includes Big Drill Car, Sublime, One Hit Wonder and Exploding F-Dolls. For information, call (714) 323-8683.

As for plans to follow “Cadillac Tramps” (1991) and “Tombstone Radio” (1992) with a third album, Coakley said that “anticipation is all we can offer people now.”

“We’ve got a lot of new material,” he said. “I want to make sure we can do it right. We’re afraid to record this and not have it distributed well"--a hazard for all bands on small, independent labels like Doctor Dream, whose contract with the Tramps calls for one more album.

Doctor Dream’s president, David Hayes, says he’s open to a contract buyout or a joint release with a larger label that could bring greater promotional resources to bear.

In the past, Hayes said, bigger companies have tended to regard the Tramps as an exciting live band whose appeal might not translate well on record. Now, he said, “A & R people (from big labels) might think twice about the Tramps because they’re getting the endorsement of bands that sell millions of records.”

But Hayes hopes the Tramps won’t delay while looking for a bigger deal to materialize.

“I’m expecting another record. I would hate to see them sit around and wait. They had (album releases) in ’91 and ’92. We need one in ’93.”

*Extravaganza is an annual free campus music festival held at the University of California, Santa Barbara every year since 1988. It takes place towards the end of spring quarter and is funded by a student lock-in fee. The event is planned, promoted, and run by the Associated Students Program Board. In recent years, the festival has downsized the number of bands in order to bring bigger-name acts, although the first performer is almost always a local act.
Notes
*Often mislabeled as "live at Canes" due to a mistake regarding the venue on a cd-r artwork Biff made for it.

* In the beginning of the show, Brad says "Fuck it! Hey man if you could get these things turned on before the end of the night that'd be key.. cause they look real nice sitting here; they look really fucking pro!" Might be referring to the high quality video equipment used to record the show.

*Following "Saw Red" Brad says; "Alright then, Rock. Lets rock this mother. cause this place can rock. Where we at? Whats up gang!?"

*During the distorted guitar in the middle of "Right Back," Brad begins to sing "What would we do without the DJ!" before going back to the chorus of the song.

* "Alright we'll play a song. All You Need alright?," then asks the audience with a growling "Sup?" This performance of All You Need is used in the Music Video on the Everything Under The Sun Boxset. (See link above.)

* Before "40 oz to freedom" Brad says "Hi Jason. lookin hot tonight." Probably in reference to Jason Westfall.

*After "Minor Threat" Brad mentions they only one more, but finishes this recording strong with a performance of Badfish and the Bad Brains cover "House of Suffering". Brad then closes out the show with "Thanks out to No Use. Let's hear it No Use For A Name! See ya next time."

*Random Fact: This show has been mistakenly traded as the "Monster Truck Show".
Notes
*In an interview, Bud said that Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran was wearing tight pink pants at this show. Brad went up behind him and smacked him on the ass.

Article from the San Diego Union Tribune
"I believe in a beautiful day," Chris Isaak was singing blissfully from the 91X Sunfest stage on Saturday afternoon. And so long as the fresh music and the bottled water flowed freely, the sun- drenched fans at San Diego State's Open Air Theatre were eager to believe, too.

After all, they soon would be asked to place their faith in far stranger notions:

Simon Le Bon playing harmonica in pink leather pants. Simon Le Bon leading Duran Duran in a glam-rap version of Public Enemy's "911 is a Joke." Simon Le Bon prancing naughtily in someone else's underthings.

Duran Duran's 45-minute set Saturday evening would have been the topper of the seven-act, 6 1/2 -hour concert -- except that it was so over the top.

For the other Sunfest bands, Duran Duran at least provided a running theme for the first day of the two-day festival. The playful Isaak, a kind of country-western court jester, promised he would cover a few of the techno-heavy band's tunes. " `Girls on Film' -- I got that one down!" he enthused.

Two sets later, Belly bassist Gail Greenwood urged fans to dance. "If you don't start moving now, you're gonna pull a muscle when Duran Duran comes on," she counseled.

The next act, Long Beach funksters Sublime, was a bit less circumspect, ad-libbing some lyrics about the rigors of "sitting through Duran Duran."

But if the boys from Birmingham, England, provided Sunfest's froth, the other acts brought along the soul food, enough to sustain the crowd when the snack-bar pizza ran out and dinner time had come and gone.

No one did it with more panache than Isaak, whose abundant talent is matched only by his refusal to take himself too seriously. Or anything, for that matter. He hit ringing falsettos on his latest single, the wistful "Somebody's Crying," then got into a fake fracas with a fan over a beach ball tossed at his head.

A mariachi-style tune, sung in Spanish with the horn parts provided by ace saxophonist Johnny Reno, somehow fit perfectly into the set's irresistible blend of aching love songs and onstage antics.

A gorgeous rendition of his sex-smoked ballad "Wicked Games" earned the highest tribute: a nearly silent crowd, save for the occasional female scream.

Despite having to kick off the show before a still-sparse crowd, opening act Matthew Sweet showed a disposition to match his name. He jokingly hand-counted spectators; "That's enough," he announced when he reached eight, before launching into the perversely yet perfectly catchy single "Sick of Myself."

Sweet's set was, as the title of his latest album advertises, "100% Fun." The new "Walk Out" was about as moody as it got, and that wasn't very. Sweet's wry, jangling pop was the perfect confection for a midsummer soak in the sun.

The biggest surprise of the day was Belly. It's a rare band that sounds far better on stage than it does on record. Stripped of slick production and too-glossy harmonies, Tanya Donelly and her band made a big and glorious noise.

Donelly, a tiny figure in dark shades and denim overalls, all but growled some verses of "Seal My Fate," from this year's "King" album, over a heavy guitar wash. "Now They'll Sleep" took on a sort of surf-rock tone, while Donelly's voice resonated alongside the powerful bass on the current single, "Super-Connected."

It wasn't a perfect performance -- the signature guitar riff of 1993's hit "Feed the Tree" got lost in the mix -- but Donelly managed to smash her reputation as a girlish-voiced curiosity.

Sounding far more rested and relaxed than in his show on the same campus last month, bass ace Mike Watt turned in a punchy, satisfying set. It also helped that he didn't have the distraction of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, who had played backup guitar on Watt's solo tour. Instead, the band was almost one big rhythm section -- two drummers, one bass and one guitar.

Watt's song "Big Train" was the best of the set, with some fine slide-guitar work and Watt's inspired bass lines. He plays so hard that when he snapped a string, he tested its replacement as if it were a bridge cable. (Maybe that's what he should use.)

Sublime was easily the most unpredictable of the day's bands, unless you were already familiar with their great chaos of reggae, funk and metal-head rhythms. Most songs started as laid-back reggae and ended as triple-tempo thrash from the self-proclaimed "hardest- working band in Long Beach."

Judging by his acrobatics, Charlie Ware is surely the hardest- sweating singer in San Diego. As he led local favorites Lucy's Fur Coat through a workmanlike set of old and new tunes, Ware once again amazed with his lunatic flailings, which were sometimes more riveting than the songs.

But how to explain the leap from Lucy's Fur Coat to Simon's Lace Bra? Duran Duran turned in a performance that was either brilliant rock theater or stupendously self-indulgent twaddle. From the moment he unveiled his apparent Freddy Mercury impersonation on the first song, a grunged-up version of 1982's smash "Hungry Like the Wolf," it was obvious Le Bon was going to shake his pink-clad rear in the face of anyone who'd dare call his band a New Wave relic.

The band blasted through a credible version of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" and later brought out rapper Melle Mel to help with "911" and Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines." But the focus was on Le Bon's posturing, amid the screams of his still-formidable fans and the requisite throwing of frilly undergarments (he even donned one of the bras.)

The defining moment was a twangy, dirge-like version of Duran Duran's first hit, "Girls on Film." It opened with Le Bon's soliloquy on the subject of, "I don't feel guilty about the '80s," along with his harmonica intro. It climaxed with Le Bon running, amid a phalanx of guards, through the crowd to a platform at the theater's center. Waving his arms like some messianic figure, Le Bon evoked, depending on one's perspective, either delirium or queasiness. Maybe both.

At the end, even the glamorously aloof keyboardist Nick Rhodes came down to wave and exhibit his finely etched cheekbones.

Le Bon's last words were, "We'll be back." Or was that "We be bad"? Either way, words to ponder

Album Information
40 Oz. to Freedom is the 1992 debut ska punk album by the Southern California rock band Sublime. 40 Oz. to Freedom received mixed critical reviews upon its first release, but is now generally approved of as a sincere and brilliant record. Sublime would not achieve any mainstream success until two weeks after the overdose death of its leader singer and guitarist, Bradley Nowell, in 1996. When this album was recorded, Nowell had not yet begun using heroin. To some degree, the failure of 40 Oz. to Freedom to sell well or earn the band a major label release caused a despondent Nowell to begin using heroin. When the band recorded their next album, Robbin' the Hood, they did so in a Long Beach, California crackhouse.

40 Oz. to Freedom is one of the most popular albums released in the Third Wave of Ska Revival. Its sound blended various forms of Jamaican music, including ska ("40 Oz To Freedom"), rocksteady ("5446-That's My Number", cover of Toots & the Maytals), roots reggae ("Smoke Two Joints", a cover of The Toyes) and dub ("Let's Go Get Stoned", "D.J.s") with British and American hardcore punk ("New Thrash"), hip hop ("D.J.s") and folk music ("Rivers Of Babylon" a Melodians cover, "Scarlet Begonias", a Grateful Dead cover).

In 1995, Sublime sent a radio CD to the influential radio station KROQ, and one of 40 Oz. to Freedom's songs, "Date Rape", became the most requested song on the station, leading the album to appear at #1 for five weeks on Billboard magazine's (North America) Pacific Region chart, and to appear on the Alternative Artist Albums Chart for fifty weeks. The band then signed with MCA Records, which, along with the birth of his son, convinced Nowell to voluntarily enter rehab. Though he remained clean for several months, Nowell died of a heroin overdose shortly before the release of Sublime's breakthrough album, Sublime.

On the original release, "Rivers of Babylon", a folky religious song originally by The Melodians, and the outro, "Thanx", were hidden tracks.

On the original pressing of the album, which was distributed independently by Skunk Records, there were two additional songs. Get Out! appeared as the second track, and the theme from Rawhide was included on the same track as Date Rape. Also, there were some samples included in We're Only Gonna Die and "Let's Go Get Stoned. Both tracks and the samples had to be removed for national distribution due to copyright issues.

The album has six covers: "Smoke Two Joints" (by The Toyes), "We're Only Gonna Die" (by Bad Religion), "5446" (by Toots & the Maytals), "Scarlet Begonias" (by Grateful Dead), "Rivers of Babylon" (by The Melodians), and "Hope" (by the Descendents).

The album ranked at #10 for Top 100 Albums of 1992 and #402 for overall by Rate Your Music.
REVIEW

I arrived at the not-so-fabulous city of Colton ready for the big day.
The location of the show was strange-- a ghost town/movie set,
where The Three Amigos was filmed. I arrived to the soulful tunes
of the local oom-pah-pah band, complete with leiderhosen, it was
kind of a neat touch. It was kind of a weird place; I can't imagine
someone seeing the ghost town and thinking, "this would be a good
place for a big ska show!" The sky was overcast, which fortunately
kept the temperature down (S.B. can get damn hot). The biggest
drawback of the whole day was the fact that the entire lot was dirt.
Put 2000 skankin' folks on a dirt lot and you get huge clouds of dust,
so thick sometimes that it would be hard to see. Another minor
problem was that the production company did not spend the money
to get a good barricade. Instead they erected a temporary chain-link
fence that did not hold up well to crowds of people.

The set-up of the show was cool. There were 2 stages, and
there were 10 bands. They alternated stages, so while a band was
playing on one stage, the band crews were setting up for the next
band on the other stage. It was nice not to have long breaks
between bands. It was hard.to even catch your breath after a band
was done!

I arrived too late to see Suburban Rhythm. They're an L.A.
band that have been quite popular in local clubs. They are big
enough in L.A. to have earned a spot on the main stage. I've seen
them once before and they're quite decent.

Then the Skeletones took the stage. I've never seen them
before, but I was quite impressed with their show! I have their cd,
I think it's okay, but I must say their live show kicked ass!

Then the Voodoo Glow Skulls played the second stage. They
seemed to be more of a ska-core band, a la the Bosstones. I kind of
cruised around so I didn't really see their show.

Dave Wakeling was next up on the main stage. He did play
some English Beat & General Public stuff. He opened with "Hot
You're Cool" and also played "Tenderness," "Mirror in the Bathroom,"
"Tears of a Clown," and a few others in addition to some solo stuff.
But his show was kind of unexciting. He looked pretty good, old
Dave's been working out and has some pretty big arms! But I
personally think he's kind of losing it musicwise. A lot of the songs
he dragged out longer than they should have been by playing the
extended remix versions, and the crowd just wasn't too into it.
When the emcee came out and suggested an encore, the
unimpressed crowd didn't grant him one. A lot of people were
getting tired, as this was the hottest part of the day, but it still
wasn't great.

----

Next up on the 2nd stage was another band from L.A. called
Sublime. I've seen them before, they're quite good, but they just
weren't happening on Saturday. I think the fact that they were very
drunk could have had a lot to do with it. ;) Their singer/guitarist,
Bradley, kept stopping the band when they'd mess up. He'd yell,
"Rewind!" and they would start the song over! They do have a
locally done cd out, and like I said, I've seen them before and they
were quite good. They play some groovin' reggae/ska and they're
worth a look.
----

Then the Untouchables hit the main stage. (They have gone
through so many lineup changes that they should really be the
Untouchables, Inc.!!!) I've seen them before many times, and they've
been both good and not so good. This show was kind of like that in
itself--some of their songs were hits, others were misses. I felt that,
for a lot of the show, they just kind of stood up there and played
their instruments, which is quite a bit different from putting on a
ska show. But other times, they were into it, so their set had its
ups and downs.

Finally, No Doubt hit the stage. I am slightly biased, as this is
my favorite band, but they put on a great show! I've seen them
about a dozen times and this ranks up there as one of my favorite 2
or 3 shows by them. By this time in the day, everyone was very
tired, so the crowd was kind of mellow, but people did eventually
get into it. They got so into it, in fact, that N.D. had to stop in mid-
song once to tell people to quit diving from the ghost town roof or
else they would shut down the show!

Gwen, the singer, was dressed for the occasion. She looked like
she came straight out of an old-time photo. They played some old
standards, and also a lot of new stuff. They played a speedcore
version of "Paulina" which was really funny, and they also played
"Pizza Coke and Ice Cream," which they haven't played live in a
while. During "Trapped in a Box," Tom, the guitar player, did his
usual mid-solo dive into the crowd and was promptly dropped,
causing him to swear he is going to give up that little routine. There
was also a funny time when Eric (keyboards) was going to jump in
the crowd and one of the bouncers tried to yank him off stage,
thinking he was a troublemaker from the crowd. Their new stuff is
great, too, especially the songs "Going with the Grain" and "Different
People," some of their best songs to date. For their encores, they
often throw in very interesting cover songs. They have done
Journey's "Any Way You Want It" before, and this time they did not
disappoint. Their surprise song this time (they don't even tell their
friends what they'll play for their surprise song) was a GREAT ska
version of the Beatles' "Ob La Di, Ob La Da." Which, if you think about
it, is a perfect ska song.

Admittedly, No Doubt is not strictly ska. They mix a lot of
styles in, and the ska is a major part, but if you only like strict ska
then they are probably not your cup of tea. But they do put on one
heck
of a show! The whole day had its ups-shows by No Doubt and the
Skeletones-and its downs, clouds of dust and a few lackluster
performances, but overall it was a great day and I hope to see more
great lineups like this in the future.
*Ever wonder what Sublime sounds like wasted? It is obvious on the recording that Bradley has had more then a few beers.
*After Sublime's set, a guy (from Warped?) starts bitching out the crowd calling them stupid motherfuckers and telling them the show's over.<font color="green"> -joHn

<font color="black">
*The band had already got 4 previous warnings to curb their behavior and had been given their last strike. Louie had been biting people at this show. Someone brought kegs for the band and the boys went on stage lit up. The venue had been rained on and the audience began throwing mud balls at each other. Then someone threw one on stage while the band performed. Eric threw one back, and chaos ensued. The Warped crew didn't like that and they shut the show down.

*Also, in the video you can see 2 other video cameras recording the show. One is an handheld crank cam, and the other is on a tripod. Both are stage-left.
