- Sublime goes into an Austin, TX studio with Paul Leary to record and mix what will become the Sublime Self-Titled major label debut.
- Bradley Nowell kicks heroin. He is clean for over a month before relapsing in May of 1996. He had quit cold turkey the night before the 04.10.1996 Boston, MA show.
- 05.18.1996: Bradley Nowell marries Troy Nowell (denDekker) in a Hawaiian-themed ceremony in Las Vegas.
- 05.25.1996: Only a week after his marriage to Troy Nowell, Bradley Nowell dies of a fatal heroin overdose in a San Fransisco hotel room. It was his first hit after over a couple of months of sobriety.
- July: Almost two months after Bradley Nowell's fatal overdose, Sublime's major label debut, Sublime Self-Titled, is released. The album is given rave reviews by critics and fans alike. Without a band to back it up, Sublime Self-Titled LP sells over 3 million copies, and is still selling today.
- Sublime is named "Rock Release of the Year" by Time Magazine.
- Sublime is named rock band of the year in a Rolling Stone readers poll.
